CURRICULUM

Introduction to our

Each aspect of our program supports children in all areas of growth, including social-emotional, cognitive, motor, and language.

Students acquire fundamental academic skills and develop positive learning habits through our emergent curriculum that introduces and reinforces concepts in mathematics, science, and language arts. The core academic curriculum is supplemented with daily creative movement classes, art, music, outdoor play, yoga, and foreign language.

Language Arts

The development and use of oral language occurs at an astonishing pace for young children and is the foundation for all literacy learning. Children use and develop their language skills on a daily basis, contributing to whole group meetings, acting out roles in dramatic play, talking with friends at lunch, negotiating problems, telling stories, or describing their work or their feelings. Children enjoy the language play of songs, rhyming games, and poetry.

Our language arts program utilizes a phonetic approach to early reading using components from a variety of curricula. We incorporate a kinesthetic, multi-modal approach to teaching all aspects of language arts, including articulation and conversational development, and is based on phonics and phonemic awareness. Our handwriting program, Learning Without Tears, is used to support the development of fine motor and printing skills as our students learn to write through a developmental progression of the formation of letters and numbers, building a strong foundation for this skill.

Science

Science instruction encourages inquiry, exploration, and observation and provides time for experimentation. Science is incorporated in numerous ways throughout our early education program, from our dedicated science lab, to nature walks, full-day field trips to a diverse array of beautiful nature reserves, and through daily materials investigated in our classrooms as provocations. Our students are naturally curious about the environment around them, and it is our goal to embrace this curiosity and foster a love for the sciences.

Mathematics

Our math program is wide-ranging, including the study of numeration, problem-solving, probability, linear counting, gradation, geometry, and patterns through the use of manipulative materials and age-appropriate activities. Hands-on math materials allow our students to begin with concrete concepts and move toward more abstract thinking.

Through the use of materials such as blocks, students learn about shape, size, and categorization of objects by attribute, symmetry, sequence, and pattern. They explore measurement during art activities as they handle water and sand, and during cooking and snack set-up activities; they develop their visual/spatial skills as they solve puzzles and work with building materials. They pursue mathematical questions that arise from their own curiosity. Teachers support a spirit of inquiry by asking children to share their experiences and process with other children in their class.

Foreign Language

Because young children learn a second language best through conversation, our students are introduced to French through a modified immersion technique. This conversational approach develops our students’ auditory comprehension and social skills through dialogue. All of our students have regular exposure, an investment that serves as a foundation for future language education and cultural experiences.

Art Atelier

Drawing inspiration from Reggio’s Hundred Languages, a symbolic imagining of the endless potential for self-expression in children, our atelier is a special place where children are exposed to a wide variety of creative materials. Children are free to explore clay, paint, pastels, sculpture, and digital drawing as well as experiment with sound and dramatic play to express their unique ideas about the world. The studio is guided by the atelierista, an educator with a background in the arts.

Music & Movement

Children are naturally drawn to music and movement. We foster this love through singing, playing instruments, and engaging in creative movement and yoga, which build strength and coordination.

Our music and movement classes allow children to integrate their mind and body, and facilitate students’ creativity, imagination, and confidence; develop their fine and gross motor skills; build impulse control; and foster self-concept and self-esteem.
